“Alibaba.com helped us turn expertise into real global trade. Today, we export over $10 million annually—and 80% of that comes through the platform.”
— Mahmudul Hassan, Managing Director of PI Sourcing Limited
A Vision Rooted in Industry Expertise
Mahmudul Hassan brought together a small team of apparel merchandisers to launch PI Sourcing Limited in Bangladesh in 2019. Armed with a postgraduate diploma in Apparel Merchandising and years of experience in factory production, Mahmudul saw an opportunity to connect Bangladesh’s manufacturing capabilities with global fashion buyers. The business was built from the ground up with export as its sole focus, offering end-to-end garment sourcing with professional merchandising support. Launching globally with just a handful of people was ambitious, yet carefully planned.
The Road Was Not Always Smooth
Launching internationally from Bangladesh came with its challenges. In 2021, PI Sourcing joined Alibaba.com to expand its reach, but soon encountered operational roadblocks. With Alipay unavailable locally, PI Sourcing had to partner with third-party payment gateways simply to get paid. Shipping under DDP terms (Delivered Duty Paid)—a common buyer requirement—proved both costly and complex. Lacking a dedicated logistics team, they worked directly with buyers to tailor shipping solutions and provide transparent cost breakdowns. These initial challenges tested their resolve but ultimately forged greater agility and resilience.
Turning Challenges into Global Growth
Despite initial difficulties, the decision to go digital paid off. Through Alibaba.com, PI Sourcing quickly connected with verified buyers in eight countries, including the USA, UK, Germany, Denmark, Canada, UAE, Portugal, and South Korea. A landmark $30,000 order from the UK provided a massive confidence boost—and that was just the beginning. Today, 80% of the company’s total business comes from Alibaba.com, and their annual export volume has reached $10 million, with 100% of their products shipped internationally. The small sourcing startup had evolved into a trusted supplier for international retailers and wholesalers.
Advice for Newcomers—and for the Platform
Reflecting on the journey, Mahmudul emphasizes the importance of learning Alibaba.com inside out. “New suppliers need to spend time learning the platform. Know how star ratings are calculated, how to respond to inquiries, and how to stay visible.” He also highlights the value of staying in touch with buyers who haven’t placed orders—because many convert later. “Send updated pricing, share samples, and follow up regularly. Timing is everything.”
He also hopes Alibaba.com will attract more high-volume buyers with significant potential, giving top suppliers greater visibility and scaling opportunities.
