CE marking is mandatory for specific product categories before they can be sold in the European Union and European Economic Area. For industrial equipment suppliers, this typically includes machinery, electrical equipment, personal protective equipment, and pressure equipment. The marking indicates that the manufacturer has assessed the product and confirmed it meets EU safety, health, and environmental requirements.
The CE marking process involves several key steps. First, you must identify all applicable EU product requirements and harmonized standards for your specific equipment. Next, you determine whether you can self-assess conformity or if you need to involve a notified body—an independent organization authorized by an EU country to assess product compliance for higher-risk products. Finally, you compile technical documentation, draft and sign an EU Declaration of Conformity, and affix the CE marking to your product.
CE marking only applies to products covered by specific EU rules that harmonise product requirements in the EU. Products that do not require CE marking are subject to general product safety rules which ensure they are safe for consumers. [1]
Critical documentation requirements include technical files that must be retained for at least 10 years after the product is placed on the market. The Declaration of Conformity must be kept up to date and reviewed whenever there are changes to applicable legislation, the product itself, or manufacturer contact details. Upon request by competent national authorities, you must be able to provide the DoC and all supporting compliance documentation.
For machinery specifically, there's an important timeline to note. All machinery placed on the EU market before January 20, 2027 must comply with Directive 2006/42/EC. From that date forward, new machinery regulations will apply. This creates a planning window for suppliers to ensure their products meet current requirements while preparing for upcoming changes.
Design Requirements: The CE marking must consist of the initials 'CE' with both letters having the same vertical dimension, minimum size of 5mm, and proportions preserved if resized. The mark must be visible, legible, and indelible.
