Grade 316/316L Stainless Steel: Enhanced Corrosion Resistance
Grade 316 builds upon 304's composition by adding 2-3% molybdenum, significantly improving resistance to chlorides and aggressive chemicals [1]. The 'L' variant (316L) has lower carbon content (maximum 0.03%), reducing the risk of carbide precipitation during welding [2]. Alternative Materials: When Stainless Steel May Not Be the Best Choice
While stainless steel offers excellent all-around performance, other materials may be more suitable for specific applications. LM6 aluminium provides lightweight construction with good corrosion resistance for general ventilation [1]. Cast iron is preferred for explosion-risk areas due to its non-sparking properties. FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic) excels in highly corrosive chemical environments but has temperature limitations (maximum 125°F/52°C) [2].
