In October 2025, data from Alibaba.com showed a sudden and complete halt in buyer activity, product listings, and search volume for fresh headed cabbage (category ID 100007116). This dramatic event initially suggested a catastrophic collapse in global demand. However, our cross-platform investigation tells a different story. The primary catalyst appears to be a targeted import ban enacted by the Kingdom of Lesotho in August 2025, which prohibited the import of cabbage, potatoes, and eggs to bolster its domestic agricultural sector [1]. This policy, while significant for its immediate region, does not reflect a worldwide trend.
Crucially, major global markets like the United States and the European Union have maintained or even eased their import regulations for fresh vegetables throughout 2025. For instance, a new US-EU Fair Trade Framework Agreement announced in August 2025 aimed to reduce barriers, and by November, the U.S. had removed tariffs on several imported vegetable lines [3]. This divergence between a regional policy shock and stable global frameworks explains the platform-specific anomaly.
