The global market for compostable tableware in 2025 presented a confounding paradox for Southeast Asian exporters. On one hand, Alibaba.com trade data reveals a stark 12.85% year-over-year decline in total trade value. This alarming figure might suggest a market in retreat. Yet, on the other hand, the number of active buyers (AB buyers) actively sourcing these products surged by a remarkable 21.46% over the same period. This divergence between collapsing transactions and exploding buyer interest defines the central challenge—and opportunity—for the region’s manufacturers.
Further complicating the picture, seller activity has never been higher. The average number of active products per seller has jumped by 67.83%, indicating a flood of new listings and SKUs entering the marketplace. This suggests that the problem isn't a lack of supply or a waning interest from end consumers. Instead, the data points to a critical failure point in the transaction funnel: a massive disconnect between what buyers are seeking and what the majority of sellers are able to credibly offer.
The market isn't shrinking; it's evolving. The old model of simply listing 'eco-friendly' products is dead. A new, compliance-driven era has begun, and those who fail to adapt will be left behind.
